The Parenting Research Centre has been working with Wanslea Family Services, a non-government agency in Western Australia, since 2010.
As part of its commitment to a whole-of-agency approach, Wanslea engaged us to support the implementation of evidence-based approaches to enhance their service delivery. All levels of the organisation – executive, leadership and practitioners – were engaged in this process.
The aim of the organisation was to achieve better outcomes for their families by:
- increasing the use of evidence-based practice and programs
- enhancing practitioner skills
- improving organisational policy and procedures.
One of our key contributions was the development of a practice framework to guide practitioners’ work with families. This required Wanslea to define exactly what it does and why; and our role was to develop the framework to include evidence-based practices and programs to achieve positive outcomes for families. An implementation specialist was also embedded in the organisation to provide on-the-ground support and coaching to staff.

Using the framework, practitioners were able to assess family needs, work with parents to set goals, and choose evidence-based approaches that would best meet those goals.
The Parenting Research Centre also helped Wanslea introduce a new coaching practice with an accompanying manual to guide coaching and supervision. We also developed a case review process, worker development plans and further modules to extend the reach of the practice framework.
PRC is now supporting Wanslea in the development of an approach to data collection whereby data can be utilised for continuous quality improvement of their service.
