Parenting Research Centre

Established in 1997, the Parenting Research Centre Inc is a national, independent, not-for-profit research and development organisation established to help parents raise happy healthy children. We do this through:

  • Seeking and sharing scientific knowledge of effective parenting
  • Developing research-based practical solutions to contemporary parenting challenges
  • Building the capability of the community to support parents.

We believe that parenting is a critical determinant of the quality of life and the health and wellbeing of children. By developing parenting capability in the community we reduce harm and protect children’s safety thereby ensuring a positive future for the next generation.

Our research focus currently includes:

  • Factors that impact on parenting
  • Parenting in adversity where children are at risk of harm and neglect
  • Parenting children with high and complex needs
  • Parenting for health and wellbeing
  • Developing effective universal and targeted parenting interventions.

We believe the science of parenting can make a difference in the everyday lives of families when it is translated effectively into usable information, policy and professional practice. To ensure this happens we:

  • Disseminate evidence based parenting programs
  • Develop parenting information resources to inform and empower parents
  • Coordinate and support national parenting support services
  • Deliver professional education in parenting support
  • Provide parenting program evaluation services to partner agencies
  • Support organisations in identifying and implementing evidence-based practice
  • Advise and resource government on the provision of evidence-based parenting support for children everywhere
  • Provide information and advice to policy makers and media.
