Established in 1997, the Parenting Research Centre Inc is a national, independent, not-for-profit research and development organisation established to help parents raise happy healthy children. We do this through:
- Seeking and sharing scientific knowledge of effective parenting
- Developing research-based practical solutions to contemporary parenting challenges
- Building the capability of the community to support parents.
We believe that parenting is a critical determinant of the quality of life and the health and wellbeing of children. By developing parenting capability in the community we reduce harm and protect children’s safety thereby ensuring a positive future for the next generation.
Our research focus currently includes:
- Factors that impact on parenting
- Parenting in adversity where children are at risk of harm and neglect
- Parenting children with high and complex needs
- Parenting for health and wellbeing
- Developing effective universal and targeted parenting interventions.
We believe the science of parenting can make a difference in the everyday lives of families when it is translated effectively into usable information, policy and professional practice. To ensure this happens we:
- Disseminate evidence based parenting programs
- Develop parenting information resources to inform and empower parents
- Coordinate and support national parenting support services
- Deliver professional education in parenting support
- Provide parenting program evaluation services to partner agencies
- Support organisations in identifying and implementing evidence-based practice
- Advise and resource government on the provision of evidence-based parenting support for children everywhere
- Provide information and advice to policy makers and media.
